NATIONAL DATABASE OF AUSTRALIAN THEATRE PRACTICE

With the assistance of an Australian Research Council grant, Flinders University is leading a group of eight universities in developing a national database of Australian Theatre Practice [abbreviated here to Australian Theatre Database Project or ATDP]. The project is supported by the Council of Heads of Australian University Theatre Studies Institutions [CHAUTSI], the Australasian Drama Studies Association [ADSA], and members of Museum Australia’s Performing Arts Special Interest Group [PASIG].

Subject to a review of its scope and approach during stage 1, the project consists of the following components:
  • creation of a website as a focal point and mechanism for data entry and searchingg;
  • development of a comprehensive national database listing all performing arts events in Australia;
  • identification, creation and storage of text, images, audio and video files to be linked to the national database;
  • identification of performing arts information and databases in Australian collecting institutions;

  • development of search protocols to extract and present data from the ATDP database and other information sources; and

  • possible conversion of legacy print-based and electronic records.

Paul Bentley was engaged by Flinders University to report on information standards and initiatives relevant to the development of a national database. The report was presented in two parts. Part 1 covered performing arts information projects, database development issues and future action. Part 2 was a survey and directory of generic information standards, frameworks and organisations.

With the permission of Flinders University, the summary of performing arts information projects and initiatives is published on our website. For further information on the national database of Australian Theatre Practice, please contact Joh Hartog, email: Joh.Hartog@flinders.edu.au
